Volleyball Suffers 3-1 Loss to Utah Valley

OREM, UT - The Chicago State volleyball team faced off against the Utah Valley Wolverines and lost 3-1.

Yanlis Feliz tallied a game-high twenty kills, while Whitney Barnes added on nine and Mesalina Severino tallied six.

Set One - Utah Valley 25, Chicago State 22

  • The Wolverines began with a 1-0 lead
  • The Cougars quickly bounced back with a 2-0 run featuring a stunning kill from Yanlis Feliz
  • This led to a trend of back-and-forth scoring which resulted in a 20-20 score
  • Suddenly, the Wolverines went on a 5-2 run to seal the set win at 25-22

Set Two - Chicago State 25, Utah Valley 22

  • The Cougars kicked off the set with a ferocious kill from Severino
  • Nonetheless, the Wolverines answered back quickly to tie it up 1-1
  • This led to once again a back-and-forth scoring trend which led to a 19-19 tie
  • The Cougars then erupted with a 6-3 run featuring kills by Feliz, Barnes, and Yunju Lee to take the set with a final score of 25-22

Set Three - Utah Valley 25, Chicago State 17

  • The Cougars kicked it off with a beautiful kill from Barnes
  • Nonetheless, the Wolverines bounced back with a 2-0 run
  • The Cougars then executed a 2-0 run of their own featuring two kills from Severino to lead 3-2
  • This led to a 13-12 lead for the Cougars when suddenly the Wolverines went on a 12-5 run to win the set easily with a final score of 25-17

Set Four - Utah Valley 25, Chicago State

  • The Cougars began the set with yet another kill from Barnes
  • The Wolverines answered back with a point then suddenly the Cougars went on a 2-0 run featuring a kill from Feliz
  • Nonetheless, the Wolverines once again dominated throughout the set and kept the Cougars at bay
  • Utah Valley finished off with a 4-0 run and won with the same score of 17-25

The Cougars next face off against New Mexico State University on October 12th at 6 P.M.

About Chicago State

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
