SPOKANE, Wash. — The Chicago State volleyball team faced off against Gonzaga University Tuesday night and suffered a 3-0 loss.
Yanlis Feliz put up 16 kills, while Berenice Almeyda tallied seven and Whitney Barnes added on five of their own.
Set One - Gonzaga 25, Chicago State 16
- The Cougars kicked off the set with a ferocious kill from Almeyda to take a lead
- Gonzaga answered back with a quick point, but the Cougars then went on a 3-0 run featuring a service ace by Feliz
- Later on, Gonzaga led, 11-10, but then went on a 5-0 run to extend the advantage
- Ultimately, the Bulldogs edged the Cougars and took the set win, 25-16
Set Two - Gonzaga 25, Chicago State 22
- The Cougars started off with a beautiful kill from Feliz
- Gonzaga then scored two consecutive points to re-take the lead
- Nonetheless, Chicago State answered back with a 3-0 run featuring kills by both Yunju Lee and Barnes
- Back-and-forth scoring led to an 11-11 tie, when suddenly the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to power ahead
- The Cougars held strong and mounted a short comeback but fell short, as the Bulldogs took another set win with a score of 25-22
Set Three - Gonzaga 25, Chicago State 17
- The Bulldogs began with a 2-0 run to take the early advantage
- The Cougars retaliated with a 6-0 run featuring a service ace and a kill from Feliz, as well as a pair of kills from Almeyda
- However, the Bulldogs bounced back and eventually led by two points at 14-12
- Gonzaga then unleashed a 6-0 run to take a 20-12 lead
- Eventually, the Bulldogs clinched the set win and completed a 3-0 sweep to take the win

The Cougars next face off against Utah Valley on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Orem, Utah.

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
