The Chicago State women's basketball team continues its three-game homestand with a matchup against Lamar at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Jones Convocation Center. The game is Chicago State's
Blackout Game, and all fans are encouraged to wear black. Here's how to attend, watch and follow:
WHAT'S HAPPENING Chicago State women's basketball hosts Lamar in game two of a three-game WAC homestand at the Jones Convocation Center. The Cougars, coming off a loss, are still relatively fresh off their first conference win in two years, a 64-57 win over Seattle on Monday, Jan. 10.
ALL-TIME Since Lamar just joined the WAC this season, Chicago State and Lamar have only met twice, last on Dec. 1, 2007, a 57-49 CSU win in Chicago. The teams' first meeting was in Beaumont, Texas, a 61-56 win for the Cardinals. The all-time series is tied, 1-1.
LAST TIME OUT The Cougars fell to UTRGV at home on Thursday night, 58-47. After falling behid 24-6 in the first quarter, Chicago State did outscore the Vaqueros, 41-34, but the early deficit proved too hefty to overcome. With 10 points, Aaliyah Collins guided the Cougars with her 11th game (out of 13) in double figures. Kyjai Miles scored nine points, and Quentarra Mitchell dropped in eight.
SIZING UP THE CARDINALS The 6-6 Cardinals are coming off of a 68-55 win over Sam Houston, which was their first win since Dec. 15 against Prairie View A&M. Led by head coach Aqua Franklin. Lamar boasts three double-figures scorers, Akasha Davis, Sabria Dean and Malay McQueen. A 37% three-point shooting team, the Cardinals are the top long-distance shooting team in the WAC.
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collons has taken the conference — and nation — by storm. She leads the Cougars (and ranks fifth in the WAC) with 15.5 points per game, and her 2.8 steals per game rank second in the league, an average that ranks 17th in NCAA Division I. Adding to the defensive punch is junior Kyjai Miles, whose 1.1 blocks per game rank seventh in the WAC.
