Preview: Women's Basketball Hosts UTRGV

Cougars fresh off first conference win

Three days after the Cougars earned the program's first Western Athletic Conference win since Jan. 2020, Chicago State women's basketball hosts UTRGV at the Jones Convocation Center at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Here's how to attend, watch and follow:

WHAT'S HAPPENING Chicago State women's basketball, fresh off its first conference win since Jan. 2020, hosts the UTRGV Vaqueros to open a three-game homestand at the Jones Convocation Center.

ALL-TIME Chicago State and UTRGV have played 31 times, with UTRGV leading the series, 23-8. The Vaqueros have won the last 20 matchups, dating back to the last CSU win on Feb. 5, 2011, an 86-79 win. The two sides didn't play last year, last competing on Feb. 8, 2020 in Texas, a 77-68 UTRGV victory.

LAST TIME OUT A 26-point, 10-rebound effort from Aaliyah Collins, her first collegiate double-double, keyed the Cougars' first WAC win since Jan. 2020 (at CSU Bakersfield). Also highlighting the 64-57 win for the Cougars were Quentarra Mitchell's 13 points and Janiah Newell's 12. Chicago State's win marked the first conference win of the Tiffany Sardin era.

SIZING UP THE VAQUEROS The Vaqueros enter with a 5-9 overall record (1-1 in conference play), with a win at Grand Canyon and a loss at Stephen F. Austin. UTRGV fell to No. 9 Texas, 93-58, in its last game, and the Vaqueros are 1-5 on the road this season. Head coach Lane Lord leads a team that features two double-figures scorers, Taylor Muff (12.3 ppg) and Sara Bershers (14.3 ppg).

About Chicago State

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title and made an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).  The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet.
