CHICAGO —For their second straight game at DePaul's Wish Field, the Cougars (2-1-1) faced off against the Bellarmine University Knights, playing to a 0-0 double overtime draw.
"This was a tough match," head coach Trevor Banks said. "It's clear we missed some opportunities in the final third which we need to be better with moving forward. We're still in the gelling process, we'll learn from this and apply to our next match. We're looking forward to getting on the road for the first time this year."
To begin the first half, both squads brought the intensity, and it showed throughout the half, as countless plays were drawn out but neither team was able to break through the defense.
Joe Bowles, who was just named WAC Defensive Player of the Week, once again provided two spectacular saves to ensure a deadlock at the end of the first half with the score at 0-0.
In the second half, the Knights and Cougars tightly battled it out once again, as with every passing minute, the intensity rose for both squads.
In the 73rd minute of the match, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick, which Calwayne Allen stepped up to take. He fired the ball towards the bottom-right corner, where goalkeeper Mathew Brozovich rose to the occasion and kept the Knights in the game with a heart-stopping save.
The half ended with both sides at zero goals, meaning that for the third match this season, the Cougars would face overtime.
After two nerve-wracking 10-minute halves, the Cougars and Knights ended in a 0-0 draw, the Cougars' first of the season.
Next up for the Cougars is a trip to Xavier University, where they'll face the Musketeers at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10.
