CHICAGO — Under a clear blue sky at the beautiful Wish Field, the Chicago State women's soccer team (0-4) took on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
In the first half, the Cougars and the Phoenix battled it out, each producing a few with various ball switches and splendid passing from both sides
It wasn't until the eight-minute mark of the first half that the Phoenix opened the scoring, courtesy of McKayla Kertscher, to make it 1-0.
That stood as the only goal of the half, as neither the Phoenix nor Cougars could break through the defenses. Chicago State freshman goalkeeper Alexa Seiler kept it 1-0 at halftime, notching four saves as for the second straight game the Cougars trailed 1-0 at the break.
To commence the second half, both teams brought on several substitutions. The Cougars and Phoenix continued to evenly duke it out as the first 25 minutes of the half, action that echoed most of the first half.
At the 70-minute mark, the Cougars clawed their way back into the game, scoring a goal of their own, a beautiful finish into the left corner of the net by Jayla Gage off of a gorgeous through ball from Romain Lorall. The goal stood as the first-career score for Gage, a freshman.
Through 90 minutes, the match remained tied, 1-1, so the Cougars plunged into overtime for the second time in three games.
Then, three minutes into halftime, Green Bay's Emily Murphy blasted in a score to win the match, 2-1.
The Cougars return to SeatGeek stadium to face Purdue Fort Wayne at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10. For tickets, click here.
