Cougars Women's Soccer Battles to Double Overtime Draw

The Chicago State women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw Friday afternoon against the Purdue-Fort Wayne Mastodons at the SeatGeek Statdium Turf Field in Bridgeview.

The Cougars opened the scoring at just the third minute mark of the match as Sara Quevedo dribbled her way through the defense and converted on a left-footed shot that ringed the crossbar and bounced in, bringing the score to 1-0 in a strong start for CSU.

Both teams produced several scoring opportunities, and Chicago State earned a chance to go up 2-0 with a penalty kick awarded in the 40th minute of the game, following a foul on Mastodons goalkeeper Samantha Castaneda.

Castaneda redeemed herself and saved the Quevedo penalty shot which kept the Mastodons within striking distance and the first half ended with the Cougars leading 1-0.

In the second half, CSU came in hot off the break and blasted in a second goal of the match courtesy of Julia Oliveira, who took advantage of a rebound given by Castaneda and gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead early on in the half.

For the next 20 minutes, the Cougars and the Mastodons each produced several switches of the ball.

It wasn't until the 72nd minute that the Mastodons earned its first goal of the game when Mackenzie Evans scored to cut the CSU lead to 2-1.

The second goal for the Mastodons was fired in just eight minutes after their first with a rocket shot off of a freekick by Kelsey Gallagher which brought the score to the eventual 2-2 regulation tie.

Both teams failed to score with limited scoring chances for the eventual 2-2 double overtime draw.
