CHICAGO — In its third match of the young season, the Chicago State men's soccer team (2-1) took down the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix at DePaul's Wish Field, a 1-0 victory in overtime.
"This was a greedy game, but we were able to fight through and came out on top," head coach Trevor Banks said. "I'm proud of the guys because they never gave up. Now we forget this and prepare for Bellarmine on Monday."
To start off the game, The Cougars and the Phoenix went back-and-forth for the whole duration of the half in a defensive struggle.
Both teams kept trading blows, producing a slew of attacks from each but neither breaking through. Goalkeeper Joe Bowles notched two saves at the end of the half, including a heart-stopping save at the eight-minute mark, which powered the result of the first half to a 0-0 draw.
In the second half, there were yet again a slew of chances to open up the scoring at Wish Field, but neither squad broke through at the end of a full 90 minutes.
This meant that for the second straight game, the Cougars headed into overtime.
In overtime, the Cougars attacked non-stop, producing the most important and eventually the final play of the game, in which Jethro Yumange pushed forward with the ball and delivered an outstanding cross into the box for Enrique Zamora. Zamora then struck the ball into the goal to seal a Chicago State win in the 98th minute.
The win brings the Cougars to a 2-1 record in a solid start to the 2021 fall season. Next up for Banks' team is a 2:00 p.m. date with Bellarmine University on Monday at Wish Field.
