BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — For their last game of the weekend, the Chicago State women's soccer team fell to the Lamar University Cardinals, 3-1.
In the first half, the Cougars and the Cardinals both started off very productively, as they each had their opportunities at scoring.
However, with spectacular saves by Alexa Seiler and tough defending by the whole Chicago State back line, the match remained scoreless in its early stages.
In the 21st minute, the Cardinals finally broke through the Cougars' defense and scored their first goal with a beautiful ball on the ground served by Carina Leal which was then tapped into the goal by Kitaru.
The Cardinals did not stop there and quickly fired in another goal with a rocket shot by Hollie Massey off of an assist by Christine Kitaru, who now had a goal and an assist in the match.
The Cougars continued on trying to produce a comeback, and with a corner at the 44th minute capitalized and scored their first goal on an outstanding cross by Sara Quevedo which was then headed in by Jayla Gage, her second goal of the season.
This ended the half on a very positive note for the Cougars with the score 2-1 Lamar.
To start the second half, the Cougars came on very positively and fast-paced as they looked to tie up the game.
But the Cardinals looked to stymie the chance of a comeback by the Cougars, however, with goalkeeper Alexa Seiler very early on racking up six impressive saves, the game remained 2-1.
Lamar finally broke through with the last goal of the match after persistent attacking at the 66th minute with a powerful cross into the box by Massey which was finished off by Kitaru, now with an outstanding performance at two goals and an assist.
This goal cemented the victory for the Cardinals as they went on to win with a comfortable 3-1 score.
Seiler posted with a stellar line, racking up 10 total saves.
The Cougars next face Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas on Oct 2 at 11 a.m.
