CHICAGO — The Chicago State women's soccer team (0-2) fell today at SeatGeek Stadium to the University of St. Thomas, 2-0.
"Today was a much better game than our first," head coach
Cristiano Costa said. "The team is improving with their fitness level, which coincides with their technical and tactical actions. I'm excited to see our team's performance next weekend."
After a scoreless first 27 minutes in which the Cougars' stout defense continually held firm, the Tommies' Lexi Serreyn struck a right-footed goal to the bottom-left part of the goal, pulling St. Thomas ahead, 1-0. Jasmine Gates tallied the assist.
The two teams then continued to battle, trading possessions routinely, before the halftime whistle, with the score at 1-0 St. Thomas.
Two minutes into the second half, the skies opened and forced a nearly 30-minute weather delay before re-starting in the blistering Bridgeview sun.
Upon restarting, Lexi Huber of St. Thomas blasted in a score at the 62
nd minute, off of an assist from Abby Branther.
A defensive stalwart then resulted from the final 28 minutes, during which captain
Lauren Reiber and goalkeeper
Alexa Seiler anchored the Cougars' back-line defense.
Chicago State is next in action on Friday, September 3 at Eastern Illinois at 3:30 p.m. and will return home on Sunday, September 5 against Green Bay at 1:00 p.m.
