Box Score Las Cruces, NM — The Chicago State men's tennis team was eliminated from the WAC Tennis Tournament 4-0 by Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center in Las Cruces, NM.
In doubles, Grand Canyon earned wins at No. 1 (over
Jakov Suler and
Jesus Perez Plaza, 6-4) and No. 2 (
Max Sandoval and
Jakub Zamorski, 6-3) to earn the team point. The match at No. 3 (
Javier Sanchez Pradillo and
Pedro Alvarez) was suspended with no winner as the Antelopes clinched the point.
"This was a tremendous effort by the guys," head coach
Jack Barton said. "They stuck to the game plan we had for GCU and it kept us in a lot of the matches, but, hats off to them because they earned the win. We didn't give it away."
In singles, Grand Canyon earned three consecutive wins to clinch the team victory and advance to tomorrow's championship match against host New Mexico State.
Jakov Suler dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 1,
Jakub Zamorski lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 and
Max Sandoval lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 and GCU earned four points for the win.
Jesus Perez Plaza (No. 2),
Javier Sanchez Pradillo (No. 3) and
Pedro Alvarez (No. 4) were each trailing in their matches which unfinished due to the team-clinching win.
"I'm glad we made it through this crazy season," Barton said. "It gave me a chance to see what the guys were made of and whose character stood tall in some adverse conditions. I'm excited about the future."
