Box Score CHICAGO — In an intra-city rivalry showdown, the Chicago State men's tennis team took down the University of Chicago, 5-4, on Monday afternoon at Stagg Courts. The teams utilized the Maroons Division III scoring rules where each doubles match counts as a point. In Division I, the team winning the best of three matches in doubles earns a single team point.
"We beat a very solid team today," head coach Jack Barton said. "They are well-coached and disciplined. This was a great team effort today by the guys. I couldn't be prouder of them.
"Who better to clinch the match than Pedro? He really fought to get back in his match and clinched it for us."
The two teams were tied 4-4 when freshman Pedro Alvarez battled to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 5 singles position, securing Chicago State's win.
In doubles action, Chicago State earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The duo of Jakov Suler and Jesus Perez Plaza won, 8-7, at the No. 1 position. Then, Max Sandoval and Jakub Zamorski powered to an 8-4 victory at No. 2. The combo of Javier Sanchez Pradillo and Alvarez then dropped an 8-5 decision.
For the singles, the Cougars and Maroons dueled to a 3-3 draw, with Alvarez's win proving decisive in the overall battle. Chicago State got wins from Sanchez Pradillo at No. 2 (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), Perez Plaza at No. 3 (6-4, 6-3) and Alvarez at No. 5 (4-6, 6-3, 6-2), who stormed back for the win.
The Cougars next travel to Edinburg, Texas to face face WAC opponent UTRGV at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning.
