Box Score Bloomington, IL — The Chicago State men's tennis team lost to Illinois State 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Bloomington Tennis & Turf complex in Bloomington. The Cougars had won two of their last three matches heading into the match against the Redbirds and have just one match remaining before the WAC tournament, a non-conference tilt against St. Louis Sunday afternoon.
Illinois State captured the doubles point winning the first two matches before
Jakov Suler and
Jesus Perez Plaza stopped the sweep with a 7-6 (5) win at No. 1.
Javier Sanchez Pradillo and
Pedro Alvarez lost 6-2 at No. 3 and
Jakub Zamorski and
Max Sandoval lost 7-5 at No. 2.
"All the matches were down to the wire and highly competitive," head coach
Jack Barton said. "It was a great effort for the guys. We don't want anyone to close the book on us. The season isn't over and we are going to keep fighting to the end and that's what happened today. We will give the same fight and effort tomorrow."
In singles, the Redbirds picked up wins in the first three matches off the court to seal the win with a 4-0 lead.
Jesus Perez Plaza lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3,
Jakov Suler followed with a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 loss at No. 1 and
Javier Sanchez Pradillo lost 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2. Freshman
Pedro Alvarez then earned his 13
th consecutive victory at No. 4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 followed by a
Jakub Zamorski loss at No. 5, 6-4, 6-3 and
Max Sandoval capped the day off with a 6-1, 6-0 win for the Cougars.
The next action for the Cougars will be a regular season ending non-conference matchup against St. Louis (April 25). The WAC Tournament is scheduled for May 1-2 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where the Cougars are the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 1 Grand Canyon May 1 at 2 p.m.
