Box Score Park Forest, IL — The Chicago State men's tennis team beat Eastern Illinois University 6-1 Friday afternoon in Park Forest. After dropping the doubles point, the Cougars stormed back and swept the singles matches for the win. Freshman
Pedro Alvarez earned his 10th consecutive victory at No. 4.
Eastern Illinois won two of three doubles matches to earn the team point.
Javier Sanchez Pradillo and
Pedro Alvarez were the first off the court with a 6-3 win at No. 3, but the Panthers won the remaining two matches as
Jakov Suler and
Jesus Perez Plaza lost 6-3 at No. 1 and
Jakub Zamorski and
Max Sandoval lost 6-4 at No. 2.
"I'm glad the guys didn't lose confidence after the doubles point," head coach
Jack Barton said. "They played very well and I didn't want them thinking about it through singles."
In singles,
Max Sandoval picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 to even the match at 1-1.
Jakub Zamorski then followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 to put the Cougars out front 2-1. Freshman
Pedro Alvarez picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4, his 10
th consecutive victory, and
Javier Sanchez picked up a 7-6 (4), 6-0 win at No. 2 to seal the victory for the Cougars.
Jesus Perez Plaza then won 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 and
Jakov Suler finished off the singles sweep with a 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 10-4 win at No. 1.
"This was a great effort in singles," Barton said. "The ball bounced our way today. We were energized and we fought for every point. This is a great way to start these last four matches."
The next action for the Cougars will be non-conference matchups against Cardinal Stritch (April 18), Illinois State (April 24) and St. Louis (April 25) to close out the regular season. The WAC Tournament is scheduled for April 30-May 2 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
