Box Score Park Forest, Ill. — The Chicago State men's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over North Central College Friday afternoon at the Park Forest Tennis & Health Club in Park Forest, IL. The win was the first for the Cougars this season and improve to 1-5 and will be back in action Wednesday, March 10 at Northern Illinois.
The Cougars earned the doubles point in convincing fashion.
Jakub Zamorski and
Pedja Kolaric earned a 6-4 win at No. 1,
Javier Sanchez and
Pedro Alvarez won 6-2 and No. 2 and
Jesus Perez and
Max Sandoval won 6-2 at No. 3.
"Just an awesome fight by our guys," head coach
Jack Barton said. "North Central really battled and we had an answer every time. After the Ball State match, the guys made a commitment to each other that, every day we get better, and we are on the right path."
In singles play, four different Cougars picked up their first win of the season (Jesus Perez,
Pedja Kolaric,
Jakub Zamorski and
Max Sandoval) while Javier Sanchez picked up his second and Pedro Alverez his third.
Javier Sanchez earned a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 1.
Jesus Perez won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 while
Jakub Zamorski picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 10-2 win at No. 3. At No. 4,
Pedja Kolaric defeated Andy Hinch 6-3, 6-2,
Pedro Alvarez won 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 and
Max Sandoval defeated Steven Mears, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 6.
"Hats off to Jesus (Perez)," Barton said. "He won the first set (6-2) and was down 1-4 in the second. He made some adjustments that, in the past, he might not have made. He won the next five games and clinched the match for us.
"The guys have really grown and made a commitment to each other. That's the culture change we talked about at the beginning of the season. Now we have to keep it up. Not only in the good times, but through the times as well. We will build character."
The next action for the Cougars will be Wednesday, March 10, at Northern Illinois at 3 p.m. in DeKalb, Illinois.
