Box Score Phoenix — The Chicago State men's tennis team lost 4-3 to Seattle University Saturday morning in Phoenix at the GCU Tennis Facility in the second Western Athletic Conference match for both teams. The Cougars were ahead in the match 3-2, with two matches still on the court, both in the third set. Seattle would claim both third-set wins to win the match 4-3. Freshman
Pedro Alvarez continues his strong play for the Cougars. He earned his seventh consecutive victory with a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
The Cougars won two of the three doubles matches to earn the team point.
Jakub Zamorski and
Max Sandoval picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2 and
Javier Sanchez and
Pedro Alverez won 7-5 at No. 3 to earn the point.
Jakov Suler and
Jesus Perez Plaza lost 7-5 at No. 1.
"We had three opportunities to close out the match and weren't able to get it done," head coach
Jack Barton said. "Unfortunately the ball just did not bounce our way. I'm disappointed to say the least. We just have to get back and keep working."
In singles, Seattle U claimed wins at No. 2 (
Jesus Perez Plaza, 6-1, 6-2) and No. 3 (
Javier Sanchez, 6-0, 6-4) to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Cougars claimed the next two when
Pedro Alvarez won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 5 and
Jakub Zamorski followed with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win at No. 4, and CSU led the match 3-2 with No. 6
Max Sandoval and No. 1
Jakov Suler still on the court. Sandoval won the first set, 6-4, dropped the second 7-5, setting up the decisive third set where he fell 6-2 and the Redhawks tied the match, 3-3. Meanwhile, Suler won his first 7-6 then dropped the second by the same score, 7-6. He dropped the third set 6-1 and Seattle U claimed the 4-3 win.
The next action for the Cougars men's tennis team will be a non-conference matchup against Prairie State College on Saturday, April 3. Chicago State will then play the University of Chicago on Monday, April 5 before their final Western Athletic Conference pod, traveling to Edinburg, Texas, to match up against UTRGV and New Mexico State on April 9-10. The WAC Tournament is scheduled for April 30-May 2 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
