Box Score DeKalb, Ill. — The Chicago State men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars started strong, gaining the doubles point, winning two of three matches but were swept in singles.
Jesus Perez Plaza and
Jakov Suler earned a 7-5, 7-6 decision at No. 1 doubles and were joined in the win column by
Javier Sanchez Pradillo and
Pedro Alvarez who won 6-3 at No. 3. At No. 2,
Jakub Zamorski and
Pedja Kolaric lost 6-3.
"Winning the doubles point was huge for the guys," head coach
Jack Barton said. "I don't think NIU has lost a doubles point all season. They came to singles with the energy they needed to win."
NIU managed a sweep in singles despite some close matches.
Jakov Suler dropped a 7-5, 7-6 decision at No. 1 while
Javier Sanchez lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. At No. 3,
Jesus Perez Plaza lost 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4,
Jakub Zamorski lost 7-6, 6-4, at No. 5,
Pedja Kolaric lost 6-1, 6-4 and
Pedro Alvarez dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 6.
"NIU showed why they won 10 of their last 11," Barton said. "We didn't lose because we beat ourselves. We played really well. The work we put in during practice and the commitment to playing hard every point showed today. If we keep playing like this, the wins will come. I'm very proud of the effort today."
The Cougars next match is tomorrow, Thursday, March 11, at Lewis University in Romeoville at 9 a.m.
