Box Score Kalamazoo, Mich. — The Chicago State men's tennis team dropped its season opener, 7-0, to Western Michigan at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Thursday afternoon.
Western Michigan earned the doubles point, going 3-0. CSU's
Max Salvador and
Jakov Suler dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 1 doubles,
Jesus Perez Plaza and
Jakub Zamorski fell 6-3 at No. 2 and
Pedro Alvarez and
Javier Sanchez lost 6-4 at No. 3.
"It's our first match in over 340 days, so it's just good to be back competing," head coach
Jack Barton said. "The energy was good, and the attitudes were excellent. Most of the teams we will play have already had five or six matches, and that was the case with Western Michigan, so we just have to control what we can control and we did a good job today."
In singles play,
Jakov Suler dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to undefeated Jannik Opitz of Western Michigan at No. 1. At No. 2,
Jesus Perez Plaza dropped a tight first set 7-5 before dropping the second 6-2.
Jakub Zamorski fell at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2, No. 4
Javier Sanchez dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision, No. 5
Max Salvador fell 6-1, 6-1 and No. 6
Pedro Alvarez dropped a 6-1, 6-1.
"I like the way the upperclassmen rallied around and mentored the freshmen," Barton said. "That's the type of leadership we need to have so we can build trust among each other."
