WHAT'S HAPPENING In their second home game after a five-game road trip, Chicago State women's basketball hosts the St. Thomas Tommies for the first time ever. 17th year head coach Ruth Sinn leads St. Thomas to Chicago to face second-year head coach Tiffany Sardin, whose Cougars earned their first win in nearly two seasons on Monday, November 22 at Wisconsin.
ALL-TIME Chicago State and St. Thomas are meeting for the first time ever. The only head-to-head meeting between a CSU and St. Thomas program was in this season's men's basketball season opener, a 77-72 Chicago State win at the Jones Convocation Center.
LAST TIME OUT The Cougars last fell to Indiana State at the buzzer, losing 59-58 on Wednesday night. Trailing 57-56 with 10 seconds left, two-time WAC Freshman of the Week Aaliyah Collins picked up a loose ball on a broken play, slashed to the hoop and sunk a layup to push the Cougars ahead, 58-57. On the subsequent play, however, Indiana State's Mya Glanton went up for a layup, which she missed, but Glanton secured her own rebound and tipped in the eventual game winner to clinch a 59-58 last-second win. Quentarra Mitchell and Collins led the Cougars with 13 points each, as Collins scored in double figures for the seventh consecutive game.
SIZING UP THE SYCAMORES St. Thomas enters on a four-game skid, as the 1-6 Tommies are in their first NCAA Division I season after moving all of their programs from Division III to I. Jade Hill and Erin Norling are each scoring in double figures. The Tommies most recently fell, 102-62, at home to Northern Iowa on Wednesday.Â
CLIMBING THE RANKS As just a freshman, former Washington State Player of the Year Aaliyah Collins is leading the Cougars with 15.0 points per game, which ranks seventh in the Western Athletic Conference. Her 27 steals lead the league, a total that ranks third in NCAA Division I. Adding to the defensive punch is junior Kyjai Miles, whose nine blocks rank second in the WAC.
