CSU Men’s and Women’s Track Teams Open 2021-22 Indoor Season Hosting Windy City Invitational

After two years of not competing in indoor track, the Chicago State men's and women's track & field teams opened the 2021-22 indoor season Friday, hosting the Windy City Invitational at the Gately Indoor Track & Field Complex in Chicago.

The field featured three teams, Chicago State, UIC and Quincy and CSU and UIC was scored as a dual with the Cougars winning 65-45. The men tied 25-25 while the Cougars women outdistanced the Flames 40-20.

Cougars competitors captured event titles in eight of the 20 events, highlighted  by freshman Yasmin Grace, who, competing in her first collegiate event, established a new school record in the indoor triple jump with a leap 11.56 (37'11.25"). The previous record was held by Lishaun Wilson who recorded a leap of 11.39 (37'4").

Fellow freshman Miahna Harden almost established a new school record in the 60m dash. She recorded the second fastest time in school history, running a 7.73, just .01 off the school record of 7.72.

On the men's side, both Mikhail Watson and Lavell Patterson set personal best times in the 60m dash, finishing with an identical time of 7.14 while Mychah Spells set a personal best time in the 60m hurdles clocking in at 8.58.

Both teams will be back in action Dec. 10, competing in a non-scoring competition at the Blue Demon Holiday Invitational hosted by DePaul at the Gately Indoor Track and Field Complex.
 
About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title and made an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).  The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet.
