HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The Chicago State women's soccer team (0-10-1, 0-4 WAC) fell to the Sam Houston State Bearkats, 5-0, on Friday.
"We go into games having a plan, but there are a lot of variables in a game," head coach Cristiano Costa said. "Within 15 seconds of kickoff, the officials issued a red card to our goalkeeper. Despite this crippling our team and the original game plan, the team battled tenaciously. Sadly, we couldn't capitalize on our chances to score. We will fix our mistakes and be ready for Stephen F. Austin on Sunday."
To start off the half, with just 37 seconds on the clock, goalkeeper Alexa Seiler was shown a red card, which meant the Cougars would now have to face a full 90 minutes with only ten players.
As a result, just four minutes into the half, Sam Houston State scored their first goal with a beautiful solo finish by Grace Stine.
The Cougars then went on to hold a tight defensive stance for almost thirty minutes. However, Sam Houston State eventually broke through Chicago State's back line, scoring their second goal of the match, which was fired in by Brooke Jones off of an assist by Jade Dewbre.
Before the end of the half, the Bearkats once again took advantage of a ten-player Chicago State squad and fired in another goal courtesy of Summer Knox.
At the end of the half, Sam Houston State led, 3-0.
In the second half, the Cougars defended well throughout the early stages of the half and, with four amazing saves, goalkeeper Stella Chiara Chiaradia assured the score would remain 3-0.
Nonetheless, due to fatigue and only having ten players, the Cougars eventually caved in, and the Bearkats scored their fourth goal of the game at the 70th minute with yet another stellar solo finish — this time by Alexis Truitt, making the score 4-0.
The Bearkats would score the last goal of the match at the 85th minute with an astonishing finish by Dewbre assisted by Landri Townsend.
The match ended with the Bearkats on top, 5-0.
The Cougars next take on Stephen F. Austin State in Nacogdoches, Texas on Sunday at 1 p.m.
