Box Score CHICAGO — The Chicago State women's basketball team (0-7, 0-4 WAC) dropped a 64-39 decision to the Seattle University Redhawks (8-7, 4-2) Saturday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Cougars couldn't overcome a cold start from the floor, converting just three of their first 13 shots. The Redhawks' defense forced 26 turnovers, leading to a 10-0 advantage in fast break points.
It was a free throw contest early as six of the game's first 12 points came from the charity stripe with
Laura Segues (Castelloli, Spain) opening the scoring from the line, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead on the game's opening possession. Chicago State then converted just one of their first eight shots while Seattle's pressure led to six steals and an early 9-0 advantage in points off turnovers. Segues scored six of the Cougars' nine first quarter points and the Redhawks led, 16-9, after one quarter of play.
Chicago State cut the deficit to six, 18-12, on a three-point play by
Ifunanya Okoye (Lagos, Nigeria /Banner Christian School), but the Redhawks went on a 14-4 run to extend their lead to 16 with 4:42 remaining in the second. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the quarter with
Christina Britter (Dunlap, IL/Dunlap ),
Nadia Thorman-McKey (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) and
Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) all converting from the floor but a late Seattle three gave the visitors their largest lead of the game with a halftime score of 39-22.
The teams traded buckets throughout the third quarter, and the Cougars cut the deficit to 14 on three occasions but couldn't inch closer. Britter scored six of her team-high 10 points in the quarter to help keep CSU in the game. However, Seattle's 23-13 turnover advantage and 19-4 scoring advantage off those miscues led to the Redhawks finishing the third quarter with their largest lead, 52-33.
Segues, Thorman-McKey and Okoye each finished with six points.
Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) added five while Okoye led all players with 16 rebounds.
