Storylines

Good 2 B Home: 62 days since their last home game, the Cougars return for their Western Athletic Conference home opener at the Jones Convocation Center, facing the Seattle University Redhawks for the 19th and 20th times overall. Last weekend at California Baptist, the Cougars dropped road games against the 14-0 Lancers. However, after California Baptist dropped 93 points Friday afternoon, the Cougars tightened their grips defensively and limited the Lancers to 67 on Saturday.

McBeast: In her Division I debut season, Nadia Thorman-McKey (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) has powered Chicago State. The Evanston, Illinois native has scored in double-figures in four of five games, including a pair of 20-point outbursts over the weekend at California Baptist. Thorman-McKey scored 20 and 22 points apiece in the Cougars' WAC-opening weekend against the Lancers. She also shot an impressive 71.4% from the free throw line after tallying a 35% clip in her first three games. Thorman-McKey leads the Cougars in scoring (17.6 points per game) and rebounding  (6.4).

Come In and Stay Awhile: Iffy Okoye, a junior transfer from Virginia Union, became eligible in December to play based on an NCAA Division I Council vote granting a blanket waiver to allow all Division I transfers to play this year. Okoye, a native of Lagos, Nigeria, made her debut December 21 at SIUE. The forward asserted herself off the bat, leading all Cougars with 12 points and eight rebounds. Okoye made 5-of-8 shots from the field in her Chicago State debut.

Croatian Sensation: Through five games, Dubrovnik, Croativa-native Ana Haklicka (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Touristic and Catering School ) has asserted herself as the Cougars floor general. The first-year point guard logged 39 of 40 minutes in the team's opener and scored 13 points in each of the first two games. With ten total assists, she also leads all Cougars.

Cleaning the Glass like Windex: Christina Britter (Dunlap, IL/Dunlap ), a junior transfer from Northern Illinois, and Thorman-McKey have owned the offensive glass during the young season. The duo has coralled 25 offensive boards in five games.

Tres for Segues: Freshman Laura Segues (Castelloli, Spain) has drilled six three-pointers this season, leading the Cougars from beyond the perimeter. The Castellolí, Spain-native scored 13 points on Saturday against California Baptist, a career-high.  All 13 points came in the second half, during which the Cougars outscored the unbeaten Lancers, 32-24.

No Sweat(er): Coach Tiffany Sardin was named winner of "Best Ugly Sweater" at the Chicago State Athletic Department's Zoom holiday party. Sardin's sweater included a full light show, dazzling the staff.
