Chicago State Athletics Launches Cougars LEAD Leadership Institute

Leadership Institute strives to give student-athletes inclusive and intentional leadership programming

CHICAGO – The Chicago State Athletic Department has launched Cougars LEAD, a leadership program spearheaded by Chicago State Director of Athletics, Elliott Charles in conjunction with the Academic and Student Services departments. Cougars LEAD will provide student-athletes with inclusive and intentional leadership programming designed to enhance the student-athlete experience and also help them navigate through transitions and pivots.

The program will consist of seven workshops each semester focusing on the following core value topics:
Personal Enhancement
Leadership Development
Career Development
Social Responsibility
Community Engagement

Students are selected via an application process and programming will consist of workshops each semester, weekly meetings as well as an internship in selected areas of the athletic department during the student-athletes off-season. Workshops will consist of a mixture of campus partners and leaders, outside speakers and athletic department staff focusing on the core value topics.

The goal of Cougars LEAD is to create an awareness and understanding of various leadership styles and approaches, while also exploring personal leadership philosophy including personal values exploration, leadership identity development and reflective practice. Additionally, it is the hope that participants will develop and integrated sense of personal identity, positive sense of self and a personal code of ethics all while team building and developing trust.
