BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the third time in as many games,
Andrew Lewis (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Vincent H.S.) led the Chicago State men's basketball team with a game-high 23 points in a 64-54 road loss at CSU Bakersfield on Friday. Lewis also added a team-best five rebounds.
Much like the first contest between the two teams, the game was close throughout. The home team took an early six-point lead before the first media timeout of the game but both teams were held scoreless for nearly three minutes out of the timeout but the Roadrunners took a 10-4 lead but a steal from
Amir Gholizadeah led to a fastbreak layup from
Ke'Sean Davis (Compton, Calif./Taft Charter H.S.) to get the lead down to two possessions before a field goal from Lewis made it a one point game.
From that point the score see-sawed between the teams for the remainder of the half. With the Cougars leading 24-23, the Roadrunners closed the half with a 5-0 burst to take the halftime lead. The Cougars were impressive from the line in the first frame, shooting 90 percent (9-of-10).
The home team took a 34-26 lead at the 15:58 mark which ballooned to double digits for the first time the entire game at the 15:27 mark. From there the Cougars started to chip away and with nine unanswered including a triple from Lewis and a crucial jumper from
Rajeir Jones (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy), cut the lead to three points with 12:22 left to play.
The teams battled back and forth and the Cougars trailed by just five points with 3:11 left but that was as close as the road team would get as they dropped the contest by 10 points.
