NASHVILLE – After trailing by as many as 16 in the second half, Chicago State men's basketball team used a 34-point performance from
Xavier Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Hopkins H.S.) to cut to lead within two during the final minutes, before falling 80-74 to Tennessee State in Nashville, Friday afternoon.
After trailing the Tigers by ten heading into the break (36-26), CSU outscored TSU 48-44 in the second half of play. Twenty-six of Johnson's 36-points came during the final twenty minutes of play as he shot 5-for-8 from deep and finished a perfect 5-for-5 from the line.
Isaiah Lewis (Romulus, Mich.) added three more treys during the second half, as the Cougars shot 9-for-15 from downtown in the final period alone.
CSU
- Johnson (36) and Ke'Sean Davis (Compton, Calif./Taft Charter H.S.) (13) led the Cougars offensive effort during the loss.
- Davis led CSU on the boards with a team-best six rebounds. I. Lewis and Solomon Hunt (Pomona, Calif./Upland H.S.) also added six boards.
- The Cougars finished shooting 13-for-26 (50%) from behind the three-point line as a team.
- Fifty-three of CSU's points came from the bench.
TSU
- Wesley Harris (27), J. Washington (14), Shaken Johnson (12), and Carlos Marshall, Jr. (11) led the Tigers in scoring.
- Michael Littlejohn pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while Harris trailed with seven.
- The Tigers made 31 trips to the foul line, compared to CSU's 17.
