Double-Double from Dela Cruz Helps Cougars Sweep UIC in Home Opener

CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball was led a double-double from senior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) as it earned a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-17) win over city rival UIC in its home-opening match tonight at the Jacoby Dickens Center.

Dela Cruz tallied a match-leading 15 kills and contributed 14 digs for her third double-double of the season while posting a .303 (15-5-33) hitting clip for the match.

The three-set sweep marked CSU's first against a NCAA Division I opponent since Oct. 16, 2004 when it swept Centenary (La.) College in a Mid-Continent Conference match and it also posted its third sweep in a season since 2014.

Chicago State (4-4) would ride on the hot serving of sophomore Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) early in the first set with a 7-0 lead that included a pair of kills from senior Gabby Pearl (Farmer City, IL/Blue Ridge) and junior Beatriz Palmieri (Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Professora Carlina Cacapava de Mello). After the visitors scored four unanswered points to pull within 7-4, the Green and White responded with a 15-10 scoring drive that increased their lead to 22-14 en route to a 1-0 match advantage.

The second set saw CSU score three straight points on two Dela Cruz kills and a hitting error by the Flames to gain an early 7-4 lead. UIC then produced a 20-14 run which put them at 24-21 that ended with a Kiera James kill, but the Cougars scored the set's final five points to head into intermission ahead 2-0.

UIC began the third set with a 7-4 lead following back-to-back hitting errors from CSU before the home team rebounded to produce a 21-10 scoring drive to close out the match.

Adams finished the contest with 18 assists and two service aces followed by senior Ludmila Bomfim (Belo-Horizonte Minas Gerais, Brazil/Escola Estadual Pedro II) dishing out 17 assists and junior Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) recording a match-high 16 digs.

Marija Borcic tallied a match-best 20 assists to lead UIC (4-3).

Next up for Chicago State is the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta this weekend that begins on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. versus Ole Miss.
