Soccer Falls to CSU Bakersfield, 5-2, in WAC Opener at Home

CHICAGO – Chicago State women's soccer opened its Western Athletic Conference slate here today at Brooks Field with a tough battle against visiting CSU Bakersfield before falling by a 5-2 margin.

CSU struck first in the seventh minute after sophomore Bailey McFarland (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan) tallied her first collegiate goal with a quick boot off a free kick from junior Samara Silva (Salvador-Bahia, Brazil/Colegio Edtadual Duque de Caxias) to gain an early 1-0 lead. The lead lasted for five minutes until CSUB's Aminah Settles scored on a penalty kick in the 12th minute to even the score at 1-1 which held through intermission.

The second half started with the Roadrunners claiming a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute after Evelyn Daly received a pass from Settles before converting a goal, but freshman Marissa Beale (Frazier Park, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) tallied her fourth goal of the season just two minutes later to knot the score at 2-2 with junior Sara Quevedo (Lomo Blanco, Spain) posting her team-leading third assist of the year.

CSUB responded by scoring three goals in the 66th, 67st and 81st minutes to seal the win.

Beale and Quevedo each recorded two shot attempts to lead the Cougars, while freshman Judith Sorribes (Barcelona, Spain/Bisbe Berenguer) set a new season high for saves at 16 with eight of those coming in the second half.

Chicago State concludes its conference-opening weekend at Brooks on Sunday afternoon against conference newcomer California Baptist with the opening kickoff set for 1 p.m.
