Klavitter Leads CSU to Second Win in a Row to Close FIU Panther Fest

MIAMI – Junior Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) produced a match-high 26 digs in leading the Chicago State volleyball team to capture its second win in a row after posting a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22) victory over Delaware earlier today in the last match of the FIU Panther Fest held at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.

The Green and White opened with a 4-0 lead in the first set with a kill from junior Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) and later increased the advantage to 10-5 after a kill by sophomore Summer Farris (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington). UD went on to score 10 of the next 17 points to slice its deficit to 17-15 after Brooke Robertson recorded a service ace. CSU finished off the set with a quick 8-4 scoring drive which included Farris and junior Kirah Williams-Shephard (Toronto, Canada/L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute) each posting two kills during the stretch.

Back-to-back blocks by Pearl and Farris gave CSU an 5-1 lead in the beginning of the second set before the Blue Hens tallied six of the next eight points played to even the score at 7-7. A 9-4 scoring run, including four consecutive service points from Klavitter, propelled the Cougars to a 16-11 advantage, but Delaware later used a 9-4 run of its own to tie the score at 20-20. Two ties and two lead changes would pass before Chicago State scored five of the last seven points to take a 2-0 margin into intermission.

The third set started with the Blue Hens producing an early 3-0 lead thanks to a block from Robertson and Julia Hayes. Two kills from senior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) and two service aces from junior Beatriz Palmieri (Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Professora Carlina Cacapava de Mello) helped the Green and White use a 7-4 run that would even the score at 7-7. A block from Farris and Williams-Shephard gave CSU its largest lead of the set at 14-9, but UD responded with a 12-7 scoring drive which knotted the score at 21-21. The Cougars finally sealed the sweep after they scored four of the last five points, including a UD hitting error on match point.

Sophomore Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) and senior Ludmila Bomfim (Belo-Horizonte Minas Gerais, Brazil/Escola Estadual Pedro II) paced CSU's offense with 19 assists and 18 assists, respectively. Palmieri finished with 12 digs and two service aces, while Dela Cruz and Williams-Shephard contributed nine kills.

Courtney Roberts (27 assists) and Maria Bellinger (15 kills) each recorded game-high totals to lead Delaware (3-3).

CSU (3-4) returns to action on Tuesday night with its 2018 home opener against UIC in an inter-city battle at the Jacoby Dickens Center with a start time of 7 p.m.
