Chicago State Posts 2-2 Tie at Youngstown State in Season Opener

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Chicago State women's soccer team opened the Cristiano Costa era here tonight with a great effort against host Youngstown State as both teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the season opener at Farmers National Bank Field.

The result snapped a 17-game losing streak for the Green and White that dated back to last season and marked the first tie by the program since its inaugural season by way of a 1-1 tie against UT Rio Grande Valley on Oct. 3, 2014.

Both teams held tough on the defensive end in the first half as there were only five shots taken during the first 45 minutes as it was a scoreless going into intermission.

Momentum started to pick up early in the second half as CSU broke the long tie in the 50th minute when freshman Aanika Stevens (Boise, Idaho/Centennial) tallied her first collegiate goal on an unassisted breakaway score for an early 1-0 lead.

The Cougars increased their advantage to 2-0 in the 69th minute after freshman Marissa Beale (Frazier Park, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) scored unassisted for the first time thanks to a chip shot that sailed past YSU's goalkeeper.

The host team responded late in regulation by scoring goals in the 80th and 89th minutes to even the score sending it into extra time. Neither team could generate a score during the two overtime periods with the score staying deadlocked at the end.

Chicago State received a team-best three shot attempts from junior Samara Silva (Salvador-Bahia, Brazil/Colegio Edtadual Duque de Caxias) and senior goalkeeper Audra Wisehart (Sandusky, Ohio/Huron) produced a game-high five saves.

Next up for the Cougars is a trip to Cleveland on Sunday afternoon as they take on Cleveland State at Krenzler Field with the opening kickoff set for 12 p.m., central time.
