Cougars Battle Tough in Intercity Exhibition Game at Loyola

CHICAGO – In their first outing of the 2018 season, the new-look Chicago State women's soccer team battled tough in its lone exhibition contest today against intercity foe Loyola on the city's north side at Loyola Soccer Park before falling to the host Ramblers by a 6-3 margin.

It marked the first time that the Cougars have scored three goals in a game since tallying a school single-game record four goals at Arkansas-Pine Bluff during their inaugural season on Aug. 23, 2014.

The hosts broke a scoreless tie in the fifth minute with a goal off a corner kick for a 1-0 advantage while adding two more tallies in the 14th and 38th minutes to hike its lead to 3-0 going into halftime.

CSU began to show its meddle in the beginning parts of the second half by starting an aggressive counter attack looking to gain its first goal of the game. The Green and White got on the board in the 55th minute when freshman Marissa Beale (Frazier Park, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) guided a shot past LUC's goalkeeper from 18 yards out after receiving a pass from junior Bailey Holifield (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) to pull within 3-1.

The visitors struck again in the 61st minute when sophomore Bailey McFarland (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan) tapped in a rebound off Beale's shot attempt that was saves to slice its deficit to close within a goal at 3-2, but the Ramblers increased their lead to 4-2 after scoring just 22 seconds after McFarland's tally.

After Loyola scored goals in the 65th and 81st minutes to bring their lead to 6-2, freshman Aanika Stevens (Boise, Idaho/Centennial) concluded the game's scoring for the Cougars in the 89th minute as she blasted a shot from 30 yards out over the far post.

Beale produced a goal and an assist in her first collegiate competition to lead Chicago State while recording two shots on goal. The Cougars had both of their goalkeepers see action today as freshman Judith Sorribes (Barcelona, Spain/Bisbe Berenguer) tallied five saves in the first half and senior Audra Wisehart (Sandusky, Ohio/Huron) produced seven saves in the second half.

CSU opens its regular season slate with a three-game road swing that begins on Aug. 17 at Youngstown State that kicks off at 6 p.m., central time.
