Men’s Tennis Faces Grand Canyon Tomorrow in WAC Tournament Quarterfinal

CHICAGO –
Chicago State men's tennis travels west this week for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at the Mesa Tennis Center in Mesa, Ariz. CSU, seeded sixth in the tournament, faces off against host and third-seeded Grand Canyon in a quarterfinal showdown on Friday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m.
 
The Green and White enter the tournament with a 5-19 record after closing the regular season with a 6-0 defeat at Purdue last Sunday.
 
Senior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) leads Chicago State with a singles record of 20-14, while fellow senior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) is second on the team with a record of 15-17.
 
Gonzalez and junior Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) have teamed up to produce a 20-12 mark in doubles play that includes a 16-8 record in dual matches.
 
Grand Canyon heads into the tournament sporting a 15-6 dual-match record and is playing for the first time since defeating the Cougars by a score of 7-0 on April 15 to close the second WAC cluster at Homewood, Ill.
 
Lucas Grego ranks first on GCU's singles list with a record of 23-12 followed by Valentin Lang producing a 22-11 ledger. Sophomore Lorenzo Fucile and junior Mathieu Rojaonah have produced a 14-12 record in doubles play for the Lopes.
 
The winner of Friday's quarterfinal will advance to the semifinals on Saturday against second-seeded New Mexico State beginning at 3 p.m.
