Savard Wins Twice as CSU Men’s Tennis Opens Second WAC Cluster against UTRGV

– Junior Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) earned a pair of wins in leading the Chicago State men's tennis team as it opened the second Western Athletic Conference cluster today with a 5-2 defeat to visiting UT Rio Grande Valley in its first outdoor dual match of the spring at the CSU Tennis Courts.
 
The Vaqueros claimed wins in two of the three doubles flights to start the match with a 1-0 advantage.
 
CSU's top doubles tandem of Savard and senior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) posted a 6-3 victory over Dennis Boisseau and Mateo Schmit which improved their record to 20-9 on the year with a 2-1 mark against WAC opponents.
 
Senior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and freshman George Botha (Craddock, South Africa/Gray College Secondary School) battled tough in their No. 2 match versus Elliot Johnstone and Yehonatan Kaufman but fell by a close 6-4 margin.
 
In singles play, UTRGV continued its momentum by earning wins in four of the six flights to take the match.
 
Botha evened his dual-match singles record to 9-9 after earning a tight win over Johnstone at No. 3 by identical 7-5 scores.
 
Savard saved the best for last for the Green and White as he bounced back from a one-set deficit in his No. 1 contest versus Boisseau. He dropped the first set by a 6-2 margin before taking the last two sets via scores of 6-4 and 14-12.
 
CSU hosts Seattle in its second match of the cluster at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club in Homewood, Ill., tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
