Chicago State Men’s Tennis Opens Four-Match Slate Today at Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – Chicago State men's tennis opened a four-match slate this week with a mid-week contest here today against host Illinois State at the Bloomington Tennis Center as the Redbirds produced a 7-0 victory.
 
ISU opened with a 1-0 match lead after winning all three doubles flights and later won all six singles flights to seal the victory.
 
Senior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and junior Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) were engaged in a close battle against the Redbird duo of Igor Kolaric and Christoffer Greve before dropping a 6-4 decision.
 
CSU then had a pair of its players compete in three-set battles during singles play in senior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and freshman George Botha (Craddock, South Africa/Gray College Secondary School).
 
Wattley captured a 6-4 win in his No. 2 match against Andreas Boers before falling in the final two sets by scores of 6-3 and 10-4, while Botha took the first set of his contest in the No. 4 flight versus Pol Rius Botifoll by a 6-2 margin then dropped a 6-3 decision in the second set and dropped the third set by a 10-4 score.
 
The Cougars return to action on Friday morning at the CSU Tennis Courts versus the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley at 12 p.m. to begin the second Western Athletic Conference Cluster of the season.
