Gonzalez Gains Two Singles Wins to Become CSU’s D-I Career Leader

CHICAGO – Senior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) continued his winning ways in singles play to capture the Chicago State Men's Tennis Division I record for career victories.

The Cougars split a home doubleheader on Saturday at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club with a 6-1 defeat to inter-city foe UIC before rebounding for a 6-1 victory over Roosevelt.

Gonzalez, who has been on a six-match winning streak since Feb. 11, surpassed former Cougar Sergiu Muresan (2011-15) by earning his 51st and 52nd career wins after the doubleheader.

The UIC match began with the Flames winning two out of three doubles matches for an early 1-0 lead, but Gonzalez and junior Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) gained a close 6-4 win over Niko Wasilewicz and Marcelo Dib at the No. 1 flight.

UIC then posted wins in five of the six singles flights with Gonzalez recording a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 over Kailash Panchapakesan for the Green and White.

CSU bounced back in the nightcap against Roosevelt by earning a 1-0 early advantage thanks to a pair of doubles victories.

Gonzalez and Savard knocked off Craig Greenwald and David Wolk at No. 1 by a score of 6-2, while sophomore Cody Wurzelbacher (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) and freshman George Botha (Craddock, South Africa/Gray College Secondary School) claimed a close 7-5 win in the No. 2 flight over Michael Gobbel and Kendrick Chong.

The Green and White closed out the match by taking the final five singles flights in straight sets after the Lakers had earned a default win at No. 6 to even the score at 1-1.

Wurzelbacher captured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rajinder Singh Kaila at No. 5 followed by Gonzalez ending his week undefeated in singles by defeating Chong at No. 4 via scores of 6-0 and 6-3.

Senior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) knocked off Wolk by identical 6-1 scores in the No. 2 contest, Botha earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 over Gobbel, and Savard produced a 6-4, 6-4 win in his No. 1 flight against Greenwald.

CSU is back in action on Friday, March 9 as it continues its four-match homestand at H-F against another Horizon League opponent Wright State with a start time of 1 p.m.
