Gonzalez Posts 19th Singles Win of the Season in CSU’s WAC Opener at UMKC

Christian Gonzalez earned a three-set singles win today at UMKC

KANSAS CITY – Senior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) recorded his 19th singles win of the season as the Chicago State men's tennis team kicked off Western Athletic Conference play today with a 6-1 defeat to host UMKC at the Plaza Tennis Center.

Gonzalez came back from losing the first set of his No. 4 contest against Diego Giraldo by a close 6-4 margin by claiming a 7-5 win in the second set then took the third set by a score of 13-11.

UMKC opened the match with a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles flights before winning five of the six singles flights to close the match.

Senior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and freshman George Botha (Craddock, South Africa/Gray College Secondary School) battled tough at No. 2 against Giraldo and Tom Kruse before dropping a 7-6 (1) decision.

The Cougars conclude their KC trip tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. against New Mexico State.
