Chicago State Men’s Tennis Posts Split in Home Doubleheader

Christian Gonzalez and Felix Savard posted a pair of doubles wins today at home

HOMEWOOD, IL – The Chicago State men's tennis team produced a split in today's home doubleheader here at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club by dropping a 6-1 decision to Southern Utah then claimed a 5-0 victory over Prairie State College.

The Thunderbirds opened the first match by claiming wins in the second and third doubles flights to post an early 1-0 lead, but CSU's No. 1 duo of senior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and junior Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) posted a 6-2 win over Agustin Tamagnone and Guy Feigin.

SUU claimed the match after winning five of the six singles matches, while Gonzalez captured the Green and White's lone point with a win at No. 3 singles when he defeated Pablo Guerra by close scores of 7-5 and 6-4.

In the Prairie State match, the Cougars captured dominant wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights for the doubles point to gain a 1-0 lead. Gonzalez and Savard recorded a dominant 6-1 win over Jofre Tura and James Kirkham then senior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and sophomore Cody Wurzelbacher (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) defeated Anthony Kendall and Nathneal Fekadu by a score of 6-2.

Chicago State continued its momentum in the singles matches by winning all four contests that began with Gonzalez making quick work of Fekadu in the No. 3 flight via scores of 6-0 and 6-1.

Wattley captured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kendall at No. 2, while Savard defeated Tura at No. 1 by scores of 7-5 and 6-1. Wurzelbacher finished the match with a three-set win over Kirkham at No. 4 with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (5) and 10-7.

The Cougars are back in action on March 2 in Indianapolis for a road match at IUPUI.
