Four Cougars Score Double Figures in Close Defeat at UMKC

CHICAGO – Chicago State men's basketball saw four of its players score in double figures here tonight as it opened a three-game road swing with a Western Athletic Conference battle against host UMKC at Municipal Auditorium before falling by a score of 76-67.

The Green and White produced an early 5-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game following a layup from senior Deionte Simmons (Detroit, Mich./Lewisville (Texas)) at the 15:55 mark. After CSU later claimed a 7-4 lead on another Simmons layup at 14:24, UMKC went on a 28-9 scoring run over a near seven-minute stretch to take a 32-16 lead with 6:50 in the stanza en route to a 39-23 halftime lead.

A 27-6 scoring run through the opening seven-plus minutes of the second half helped the Cougars recapture the lead at 50-45 with 12:46 remaining in the game. Senior Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) [11 points] and redshirt freshman Travon Bell (Chicago, Ill./Mather) [eight points] combined for 19 of CSU's points during that run.

The Kangaroos later tied the score at 50-50 at the 11:28 mark before junior Rob Shaw (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) put the visitors back up 52-50 with a jumper just a minute later. UMKC then responded with a 19-7 drive in six minutes to post a 69-59 advantage with 4:04 remaining and the Cougars would get no closer than six points for the rest of the game.

Simmons posted his third double-double of the season to lead Chicago State as he produced game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line in addition to posting two steals and a blocked shot.

Burns added 17 points as he connected on six of his eight field-goal attempts. Shaw tied a season high for scoring with 11 points for the second straight contest and dished out a career high-tying eight assists, and Bell shot 4-of-5 from the field to finish with 10 points.

Jordan Giles and Brandon McKissic each tallied 17 points to lead UMKC in the contest.

The Green and White continue their road swing on Feb. 22 against New Mexico State at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M. with the opening tip set for 8 p.m.
