Cougars Edge Trinity Christian to Extend Win Streak to Third Straight

CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's basketball team had a tough battle Thursday night as it closed a three-game homestand at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center before edging out visiting Trinity Christian College by a score of 84-82 to extend its winning streak to three straight victories.

CSU posted its first three-game win streak since March 9-16, 2013 and increased its season record to 3-8, while TCC saw its record drop to 3-11 on the year.

The Green and White opened the game with a 12-5 lead at the 14:49 mark on a layup from Harris, but the visitors went on a quick 15-8 over a span of 4:22 to even the score at 20-20 with 10:16 remaining in the stanza. CSU produced 11 of the next 18 points scored in a four-plus minute stretch to reclaim a close 31-27 advantage with 3:12 left in the half before TCC would finish off the half by going on another 15-8 run to go into halftime ahead by a 42-36 margin.

Trinity Christian started the second half with an 8-3 scoring drive in just two and a half minutes to take its biggest lead of the contest at 50-39 which concluded on a three-pointer from Josh Decker with 17:27 left. A 21-10 run in a five-minute span brought the Cougars back into the game for a 60-60 tie at the 12:01 mark in the half, but TCC scored six unanswered points on back-to-back three-pointers from Jalyn Clark to recapture the lead at 68-62 with 10:15 remaining in the game.

Chicago State then went on a 22-12 scoring drive over nine minutes to take back the lead at 84-80 that concluded on another Harris layup with 1:02 left in regulation. A dunk from Terrance Lacey at the 28-second mark pulled the visitors to 84-82. Following a Cougar turnover, the Trolls missed a last-second three-point attempt and sophomore Cameron Bowles (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) grabbed the defensive rebound to seal the win for the home team.

Harris shot 10-of-16 from the field and 7-of-9 at the free throw line to tally a career-best 27 points while adding nine rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots for CSU, who finished the game with four players scoring in double figures.

Bowles equaled his season-high scoring total by adding 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and tied a career high with three blocks, while fellow sophomore Travon Bell (Chicago, Ill./Mather) added 14 points and senior Rob Shaw (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) tallied 10 points with eight assists.

Clark scored 26 points to lead three TCC players in double figures.

CSU kicks off a five-game road swing at DePaul on Dec. 12 in a live broadcast on Fox Sports 1 with a start time of 7 p.m.
