Big Second Half Comeback Helps CSU Defeat Eastern Illinois, 80-72

CHICAGO – A big comeback in the second half helped host Chicago State defeat visiting Eastern Illinois by a score of 80-72 in an in-state NCAA Division I men's basketball showdown this afternoon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
The victory gives the Cougars their first two-game winning streak since the 2015-16 season and improves their season record to 2-8, while Eastern drops to 3-5 on the year.
 
EIU took an early 5-0 lead in the opening minute of the game following a Shareef Smith three-pointer and a layup by Josiah Wallace with 19:11 remaining, but the Green and White tallied 11 of the next 17 points over a three-minute span to even the score at 11-11 at the 14:33 mark following a layup from senior Rob Shaw (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier). The Panthers regained the lead at 21-11 with 11:46 after scoring 10 unanswered points in a stretch of 2:35
 
CSU went on to tally 18 of the next 31 points scored in eight and a half minutes to slice its deficit to 31-29 which ended with a layup by senior Anthony Harris (Gary, Ind./Griffith (Ind.)) with 3:18 left in the stanza, but the visitors closed the half with a 10-3 run down the stretch to go into halftime ahead by a 41-32 margin.
           
The second half saw the Cougars retake the lead at 54-48 with 14:25 left after going on a big 22-7 run in a near six-minute span with sophomore Travon Bell (Chicago, Ill./Mather) scoring nine points and Shaw adding seven points. After EIU posted a 12-5 scoring drive to gain a 60-59 advantage at the 9:45 mark, Chicago State came back by scoring 10 of the next 22 points in a six-minute span to recapture the lead at 71-68 with 3:45 left in the game on another Harris layup. A 9-4 drive in the final three minutes sealed the win for the Green and White.
 
Bell finished the game shooting 5-of-7 from the field, including 5-of-6 from three-point range, to tie his career scoring high with 16 points to lead five CSU players in double figures.
 
Shaw posted his second straight double-double as he scored 14 points and dished a career-best 11 assists, while Harris recorded a double-double of 12 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior Delshon Strickland (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnetonka ) contributed 12 points and Bowles finished with 11 points to round out the quartet.
 
Wallace recorded 18 points, five rebounds and three assists to lead EIU.
 
The Cougars end their homestand on Thursday, Dec. 6 against Trinity Christian College live on the WAC Digital Network with the opening tip set for 7:05 p.m.
