Four Cougars Score in Double Figures in Home Opener to Give Irvin First Career Coaching Win

CHICAGO – Four players scored in double figures for the Chicago State men's basketball team as it gave first-year head coach Lance Irvin his first collegiate coaching win Thursday night thanks to a 90-67 victory over East-West in its home opener at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center.
 
After a back and forth battle with the Phantoms in the first half before taking a slim 32-31 halftime lead, the Cougars stormed out of the gate in the second half as it captured 58-36 advantage to snap a nine-game losing streak dating back to the end of last season.
 
Senior Anthony Harris (Gary, Ind./Griffith (Ind.)) shot 9-of-13 from the field to score a game-high 19 points for CSU (1-8), while fellow senior Rob Shaw (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) produced his first collegiate double-double with 18 points and dishing out a career-best 10 assists.
 
Tallying a new career scoring high was sophomore Travon Bell (Chicago, Ill./Mather) as he produced 16 points and he tied another career marker in the game with nine rebounds. Sophomore Cameron Bowles (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) rounded out the quartet by posting 15 points, five boards, four assists and a game high-tying two blocked shots.
 
East-West (1-19) was paced by Marlik Williams as he tallied 16 point to lead three players in double figures.
 
CSU is back in action this Saturday afternoon with another in-state showdown as Eastern Illinois comes to the JCC in a WAC Digital Network broadcast starting at 2:05 p.m.
