Men’s Basketball Falls to Illinois State in Tight In-State Battle, 75-71

NORMAL, Ill. – Chicago State men's basketball fought a tight battle against in-state rival Illinois State tonight at Redbird Arena in the first campus game of the Grand Cayman Island Classic. The host team would use a late run in the second half to escape with a close 75-71 win over the Green and White.
 
The Redbirds posted an early 11-4 lead in the opening five-plus minutes of the game after a three-pointer from Josh Jefferson at the 14:41 mark, but a pair of three-pointers from sophomore Travon Bell (Chicago, Ill./Mather) brought the visitors to within a point at 11-10 with 13:40 remaining in the half. ISU responded by going on a 20-7 scoring run in a six-plus minute span to increase its leading margin to 25-15 after another Jefferson three at 7:22. Both teams would score 14 points apiece in the final seven minutes to end the stanza with the home team staying ahead by 10 points via a 39-29 margin at halftime.
 
CSU started the second half with a 21-15 drive over a span of six minutes that sliced its deficit to 54-50 which ended on a layup by sophomore Cameron Bowles (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) at the 11:54 mark and a free throw by junior Patrick Szpir (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) at 11:28. After the Redbirds increased their lead to 60-52 at the 8:31 mark on a Rey Idowu layup, the Green and White then posted a 16-2 run in a 4:27 stretch to capture their first lead of the game at 68-62 with after another Shaw layup. Bowles and junior Christian Jacob (Gary, Ind./Westside) each scored five points for the Cougars during the run. Illinois State then came back with a 13-3 in the last three minutes behind eight points from Milik Yarbrough to take the victory.
 
Bowles tallied 19 points and grabbed a game high-tying nine rebounds to lead four players in double figures for Chicago State (0-4). Senior Anthony Harris (Gary, Ind./Griffith (Ind.)) added 12 points and hit all eight of his free throw attempts, Bell finished with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, and Jacob also recorded 11 points with seven rebounds.
 
Yarbrough produced game highs of 24 points and seven assists as well as nine rebounds to lead ISU (2-1).
 
CSU heads to Ohio for its second campus game of the Grand Cayman Islands Classic this Friday night when it takes on Akron in a live ESPN3 broadcast beginning at 6 p.m., central time.
