CHICAGO – Chicago State volleyball opened its three-match Western Athletic Conference homestand tonight at the Jacoby Dickens Center after falling to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley by a 3-0 margin.

The visitors opened the match with a 25-18 win in the first set before both teams found themselves in a tough second set battle as UTRGV claimed a close 27-25 victory heading into intermission. In the third set, the Vaqueros posted a .306 hitting percentage which helped them close out the contest with a 25-19 win.

CSU held an 8.0-6.0 advantage in total blocks in the match with junior Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) leading the way with a season-high five blocks (two solo, three assisted).

The Green and White were guided by junior Megan Klavitter (Fenton, Mich./Linden) as she recorded a match high-tying 17 digs and two service aces, while sophomore Lacee Adams (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) and senior Ludmila Bomfim (Belo-Horizonte Minas Gerais, Brazil/Escola Estadual Pedro II) each produced 16 assists.

Senior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) added 13 digs and junior Kirah Williams-Shephard (Toronto, Canada/L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute) finished with eight kills for the Cougars (7-13, 1-3).

Ragni Steen Knudsen posted a match-high 17 kills to lead UTRGV (13-6, 4-1).

Chicago State continues its homestand on Saturday at 12 noon at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center against defending WAC champion New Mexico State.
