OPENING TIP: The Chicago State women's basketball team heads to Phoenix on Thursday in the start of a three-game road swing with a Western Athletic Conference contest against host Grand Canyon at the GCU Arena with the opening tip set for 8 p.m.

SCOUTING CSU: CSU looks to rebound from its short conference homestand last week at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center where it fell to Seattle (56-63) and Utah Valley (30-68). The Cougars are paced on the offensive end by freshman guard Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) and redshirt senior guard Phylicia Johnson (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central). Bowers is averaging team-highs of 12.8 points and 2.6 assists per game, while Johnson ranks second in scoring at 11.6 points per contest. Redshirt sophomore forward Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain) leads the team with averages of 8.1 rebounds, 1.9 blocked shots and 1.7 steals per game to go along with scoring 9.2 points a game.

SCOUTING GCU: Grand Canyon, winners of six of its last seven contests since Dec. 14, enters the week sporting an 8-9 season record that includes a 2-1 mark against conference opponents. GCU recorded a WAC road doubleheader split with a pair of close games last week via a 64-60 loss at defending league champion New Mexico State and a 65-59 victory at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Lopes are paced by senior guard Brie Mobley's averages of 19.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, while redshirt senior guard Jessica Gajewski is averaging 13.3 points a game. Gajewski is also shooting 95 percent from the free throw line, 46 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range on the season. Redshirt senior guard August Touchard has produced team highs of 3.6 assists and 1.5 steals a game to go along with a scoring average of 11.2 points per game. The final GCU player averaging double figures is redshirt senior guard Jordan Jackson with 10.4 points a game.

SERIES HISTORY: Grand Canyon has tallied an 8-0 all-time lead in the series with Chicago State as Thursday's contest serves as the ninth lifetime meeting between the two teams. The Lopes swept last season's series which included a 57-39 win in Phoenix on Jan. 28, 2017 and a 73-62 victory in the rematch in Chicago on Feb. 23, 2017.

NETTING A NEW CAREER HIGH: Sophomore forward Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) made a mark during last Thursday's home contest against Seattle as she produced a career-best 12 points and a season-high seven rebounds while shooting 5-of-7 from the field.
