Three Players Score in Double Figures as Cougars Drop Close WAC Contest at Seattle

SEATTLE – The Chicago State men's basketball team had three players score in double figures on Thursday night during its Western Athletic Conference contest here against host Seattle at the Connolly Complex, but a late run in the second half would help the Redhawks post a close 67-64 win.

The Redhawks opened the contest with a 7-0 lead just three minutes into the first half and later took a 17-4 advantage at the 14:27 mark following an Aaron Menzies dunk. CSU then went on a 15-2 run of its own in five minutes to tie the score at 19-19 after senior Alex Dubovitskiy (Moscow, Russia/Marianapolis Preparatory School) canned a three-pointer with 9:27 left in the half. Both teams battled through three lead changes and two ties in a three-minute span before the Green and White used a 10-3 run in the final 6:24 to go into intermission with a 33-31 lead with junior Fred Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale) draining a pair of free throws at the 35-second mark.

Chicago State kicked off the second half with baskets from seniors Glen Burns (West Memphis, Ark./West Memphis Christian) and Montana Byrd (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) to hike its lead to 37-31 just 38 seconds in at the 19:22 mark. After SU scored five unanswered points to pull within a point (37-36) with 17:14 remaining, the Cougars recorded 13 of the next 20 points scored in six-plus minutes to post their biggest lead of the contest at 50-43 following a layup by freshman Cameron Bowles (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) at 10:58. A Sims three-pointer helped CSU sustain its lead at 55-50 with 8:25 left in regulation before Seattle notched a 17-9 drive in nearly seven minutes to end the game.

The Green and White held advantages over SU in several categories that include steals (9-3), free throw percentage (87%-67%), points off turnovers (23-11) and bench points (21-4).

Sims and Bowles each scored 12 points to lead CSU with both players combining to go 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Junior Anthony Harris (Gary, Ind./Griffith (Ind.)) contributed 11 points on 4-of-7 from the field, while Burns tallied nine points, seven rebounds five assists and two steals.
