Savard, Martinez Post Singles Wins versus UMKC for Cougars in WAC Finale

Felix Savard posted his third straight singles win with a three-set victory today against UMKC

SEATTLE – Sophomore Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) and junior Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) posted singles wins today for Chicago State men's tennis as it concluded Western Athletic Conference regular-season play here at the Amy Yee Tennis Center with a 5-2 defeat to UMKC.

Savard finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 singles mark in the No. 2 flight after coming back from a 7-5 setback in the opening set to defeat Uldis Gaismins in the final two with identical 6-3 scores.

Martinez also came back from a first-set defeat in his No. 3 contest against Amaury Navette by a 7-6 margin by winning 6-3 in the second set and 10-6 in the final set.

Fellow junior Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) was also in a three-set battle versus Mike Psarros at No. 5, but fell by scores of 1-6, 6-4 and 6-4.

The Roos opened the match with 1-0 lead after earning wins in two of the three doubles flights.

Martinez and Gonzalez produced a 6-4 victory over Gaismins and Navette at No. 2 for their third consecutive win and finished with a 4-1 record against conference opponents.

The Green and White resume play on April 17 with an inter-city match at rival UIC beginning at 12 p.m.
