Cougars Fall to UT Rio Grande Valley, 6-1, to Open Second WAC Cluster

Felix Savard earned a win at No. 2 singles for CSU against UT Rio Grande Valley
SEATTLE – Chicago State men's tennis team opened the second Western Athletic Conference cluster here at the Amy Yee Tennis Center as it fell to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley by a 6-1 margin.
 
UTRGV opened the match with a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles flights.
 
Juniors Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) improved their record to 15-11 overall and 2-1 in the WAC after posting a 7-5 win in the No. 2 flight over Elliot Johnstone and Andres Hernandez.
 
Sophomore Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) and freshman Jiri Nouza (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Budejouicka 680) were in a tight battle at No. 1 against Yehonatan Kaufman and Mateo Schmit before falling by a 7-6 (7-5) score.
 
Savard came back in his No. 2 singles match against Kaufman by earning a 7-6 (7-5) win in the first set and was ahead by a 4-1 score in the second set before Kaufman retired.
 
The Green and White will battle host Seattle U in a WAC matchup tomorrow at 2 p.m.
