Men’s Tennis Defeats Seattle U in WAC Tournament, 4-0

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Fourth-seeded Chicago State men's tennis made some history here today at New Mexico State's Tennis Center as it defeated fifth-seeded Seattle U by a score of 4-0 in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship.
 
The victory serves as the first for CSU in a conference tournament since 2002 when it captured a 4-3 win over UMKC in the third-place match also as a fourth seed at the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament in Valparaiso, Ind.
 
The Green and White opened the contest with a 1-0 lead after posting wins in two doubles matches.
 
Juniors Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) and Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo), just a day removed after claiming First Team All-WAC honors in doubles, dominated Michael Schoettler and John Stormans in the No. 2 flight with a 6-0 win.
 
The No. 3 duo of junior Rohan Wattley (Slough, United Kingdom/Burnham) and freshman Cody Wurzelbacher (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) clinched the doubles point by coming back from a 4-1 deficit to Trenton Nield and Adam Sanabria to score the final five points for a 6-4 victory.
 
Martinez began singles play by knocking off Schoettler in the No. 3 flight via scores of 6-0 and 6-2, while freshman Jiri Nouza (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Budejouicka 680) recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win against Arshak Ghazaryan at No. 1.
 
Gonzalez clinched the match for the Cougars after defeating Matt Alderson in the No. 5 match by identical 6-2 scores.
 
CSU advances to tomorrow's semifinal round where it will take on top-seeded New Mexico State with the first serve set for 2 p.m.
