Men’s Tennis Opens WAC Tournament Play Friday against Seattle

CHICAGO – The Chicago State men's tennis team heads to Las Cruces, N.M., this weekend for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, which will be held at the New Mexico State Tennis Center.
 
The fourth-seeded Cougars will open the tournament on Friday afternoon with a first-round battle versus fifth-seeded Seattle U with a start time of 2 p.m.
 
CSU has produced a season record of 7-15 despite dropping their last two regular season matches on the road against local teams UIC (5-2) and No. 21 Northwestern (6-0).
 
Junior Gonzalo Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo) is the team's top singles player with a record of 17-18, while sophomore Felix Savard (Laval, QC Canada/Saint-Gabriel) is holding a 15-17 singles mark that includes an 8-4 record in the No. 2 spot.
 
Martinez has also tallied a 17-13 doubles record with fellow classmate Christian Gonzalez (Mungia, Spain/Larramendi Ikastola) that included a 4-1 record against WAC opponents.
 
SU holds a 10-14 record on the season while breaking a five-match losing streak on April 13 in its regular-season finale with a 7-0 win over Puget Sound.
 
The Redhawks' top player is sophomore Jeremiah Kalmus as he has produced a 16-10 record in singles action. Fellow sophomore Michael Schoettler and senior John Stormans have tallied a 9-9 doubles record on the year.
 
Friday's winner advances to the semifinal round on Saturday afternoon to face off against top-seed New Mexico State at 2 p.m.
