Four Cougars Score in Double Figures against Seattle at WAC Tourney

LAS VEGAS – The Chicago State women's basketball team had four players score in double figures during its Western Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal showdown against Seattle U here tonight at Orleans Arena.
 
Second-seeded SU had a big fourth-quarter rally which helped it defeat the Cougars by a score of 78-60.
 
The Redhawks scored six unanswered points in the first two minutes of the opening quarter before CSU bounced back with 14 of the next 23 points in the final five-minute span to pull within a point at 15-14 at the end of the stanza.
 
The second quarter saw the Green and White open with baskets from redshirt junior Jessica Cerda (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) and sophomore Kaylee Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) to gain an 18-15 lead in the first two minutes and later increased the leading margin to 20-17 on a layup from junior Destiny Harris (Crete, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor). The next four minutes saw three ties and four lead changes before SU used a quick 6-2 run to gain a 31-27 lead with 33 seconds remaining before senior Cailin Nix (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) canned a three-pointer with two seconds left to pull the Cougars within a single point at 31-30 going into halftime.
 
Seattle tallied seven unanswered points in over two minutes of the third quarter to hike its advantage to 38-30 with 7:39 remaining in the stanza. CSU then produced an 18-7 run over a stretch of six minutes to recapture the lead at 48-45 after a Harris layup at the 1:11 mark, but the Redhawks tallied the final five points close the quarter with a 50-48 advantage.
 
SU shot 64 percent from the field in the fourth quarter to outscore the Cougars by a 28-12 margin for the victory.
 
Cerda scored 15 points to lead CSU and connected on 3-of-5 from three-point range. Allen contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals two assists and two blocked shots in the contest, while Nix also tallied 13 points. Harris shot 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to add 11 points and freshman Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) set a season high with three blocked shots.
 
Wilma Afungo led five Seattle players who scored in double figures with a game-high 22 points, and Alexis Montgomery tallied a double-double of a game-high 18 rebounds and 11 points.
